Ruthenium, RU44 within the periodic table, is one of the rarest elements in Earth’s crust. Although it belongs to the platinum group, it is even more rare than the element to which the groups derives its name.
However, it is not specifically the rarity of this element that makes it so applicable in high-end products. It is rather due to its extreme hardness and insensitivity to oxidation that it is often applied in high end electronic elements, aerospace engineering and and precious jewellery.
Ruthenium has a very specific and beautiful complex colour, optically changing depending on the incidence of light. It ranges between anthracite to a warm brown or even green, which makes it an excellent material to create a very distinctive looking dial, and which makes it extremely suitable for the style of Holthinrichs Watches.
